Gwen Krosnick
Described by the Daily Forward as “an exuberantly gifted cellist,” Gwen Krosnick has played across the world as a joyous communicator and advocate for music. In her life as a chamber musician, teacher, and concert presenter, Krosnick creates space for audiences to connect and react; champions great contemporary music; and – with vivid, thoughtful programming – encourages a lively dialogue between wondrous pieces of music, old and new.
Highlights of this season and last include solo recitals of works by Ralph Shapey, Elliott Carter, J.S. Bach, Lei Liang, Roger Sessions, and Donald Martino; duo concerts with pianist Daniel Walden, pairing works of Webern and Shapey with Beethoven lieder in Krosnick’s own transcriptions; and performances of the complete early and middle Beethoven quartets on the Boston Beethoven Cycle, the concert series she runs at the esteemed Pucker Gallery on Newbury Street. In spring 2017, she served as Visiting Instructor of Cello on the faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and she most recently joined the faculty of the National Music Festival, where she taught the cello, performed and coached chamber music, and appeared in June with the festival orchestra in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Krosnick’s 2018-2019 season includes the complete late Beethoven string quartets on her Boston series, and several east coast recitals with pianist Qing Jiang.
Prior to receiving a Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory (with Natasha Brofsky, as part of Trio Cleonice, NEC’s Graduate Piano Trio-in-Residence from 2011-2014), Krosnick graduated from the double-degree program at Oberlin College and Conservatory; she studied the cello with Darrett Adkins and Dmitry Kouzov, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian Language and Literature. Away from the cello, Krosnick’s focus mimics her joyously-varied musical life: she is Mom to a wonderful Australian Shepherd rescue dog; practices yoga, reiki, and meditation (for which she is a trained practitioner at the RYT-200 and Reiki I levels); and is an expert and exuberant home cook.
